Not every portrait is meant to please. Some are meant to speak. My portraits are created as visual statements — not as standard representations, but as expressive images that explore identity, emotion, and presence. We met this elderly woman in Tanzania.
Carrying a heavy bundle of firewood, she did not understand why we wanted to photograph her.
The result became one of Bertrand’s most successful portraits.
